Kindness Krew

The Kindness Krew at St. Matthew School has been hard at work spreading kindness throughout the school and the larger community. They began the year by planning various initiatives to spread kindness in each classroom and beyond.

In September, the school was chosen to receive books from the Jays Cares Foundation in partnership with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Kindness Krew sorted over 300 books to ensure that each student received a book.

In October, the Kindness Krew made warm fuzzies for grades 1, 2, and 3. They spent a long time making pom-poms and turning them into little creatures with positive messages. These warm fuzzies were placed on each student’s desk as a surprise.

In November, the grades 3, 4, and 5 students wrote their own kind deeds on light-shaped paper. The Kindness Krew created a bulletin board with these deeds, which inspired other students to add their own kind deeds.

In December, the Kindness Krew created a bulletin board called “Take What You Need” using words from Character Strong. They found words of encouragement that supported each word, such as respect, responsibility, gratitude, empathy, perseverance, honesty, cooperation, courage, and creativity. This board was very popular and had to be refilled several times.

During January and part of February, the Kindness Krew worked hard to create personalized compliment cards for each student. They placed these cards and candy on each student’s desk before they arrived, which brought a lot of excitement.

At the end of February, the school held an assembly for Pink Shirt Day. One of the younger grades created a liturgy based on kindness, and the Kindness Krew shared what they had been doing. They also distributed pamphlets, tattoos, and workbooks from SaskTel about being kind online.

As March began, the Kindness Krew created a “So Lucky to Have You” bulletin board in the common area. They also planned to make cookies for the kindergarten and middle years students to spread love and kindness.

The Kindness Krew’s Lenten Project kicks off next week. They will begin collecting socks and toiletries for Carmichael Outreach, which will be delivered in April.

In April, the Kindness Krew has planned a kindness bracelet-making opportunity and a kindness rocks project.
